Red Rocks & Hiwan Homestead | Sometimes, photo shoots don’t go as you plan. The model and the photographer spend a lot of time planning on where to have the shoot and coordinating schedules. For Christian’s senior portraits, this was the exact case.
Christian’s mom, Laura, had told me he was planning on bringing his skiing equipment and a Ferrari to his shoot. I was pumped! Coming up with a place to shoot that was both rustic and outdoors (for the skis) and safe for a Ferrari to drive on was a challenge and I was ready for it. After we all did some scoping, we played around with several locations, all of which either had an immense amount of roadwork or were closed due to the floods back in September. However, we didn’t learn a lot of this until we were already pulling into these locations! Needless to say, we had to scurry and think creatively and fast!
When I suggested Red Rocks to Christian for the Ferrari shoots, Mike suggested that once we left there we could head to the Hiwan Homestead for some great shots of Christian with his ski gear. Now, anyone who’s ever been to a Red Rocks concert knows it’s incredibly insane and traffic is…well, at a dead stop. However, we were so lucky that there wasn’t a concert going on that night because we found an empty parking lot that gave us the freedom to shoot wherever and however we wanted. Afterwards, we headed over to Evergreen to finish up his senior shoot right around sunset.
I am so grateful that Christian (and his mom!) were so patient and willing to roll with the punches. Sometimes it’s rain, sometimes it’s a pimple, and sometimes every location you pick is under construction. As a photographer, your job is to cooly roll with the punches and think creatively at a moments notice. I’m so excited that we got to meet and work with Christian and Laura on such a beautiful fall evening!
Cheers,
Tay
